Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
