Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
