Advocacy Group Claims to Have Extracted Countless of Audio Files from Spotify

A digital rights organization has stated to have scraped millions of tracks from the popular streaming service and is preparing to release them online.

Possible Boost for AI Training

Industry experts said the seeming leak could boost AI companies searching for data to train their models.

A group known as Anna’s Archive said it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million entries of associated data such as performer and record names. The company, which hosts more than 100 million songs, confirmed that the breach did not represent its entire inventory.

“We have located and disabled the nefarious user accounts that engaged in illegal scraping,” stated a Spotify spokesperson.

The Stockholm-based service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, further explained that an investigation into unauthorised access found a external actor scraped public metadata and used illicit tactics to bypass DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Declared Mission and Concerns

Spotify does not think the music taken by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for providing links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

They asserted the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by its listeners and would be shared via ‘torrents’, a method of exchanging large data files online.

“Of course Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which describes its purpose as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

AI Training and Intellectual Property Battleground

A composer and campaigner for defending artists’ copyright, remarked the breached music would probably be used for training AI models.

“Training on pirated material is unfortunately common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is highly likely to be used instructing AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site makes references to a large online archive, a huge online archive of copyrighted books that has reportedly been used by Meta to develop its systems.

The co-founder of an artificial intelligence company posted on LinkedIn that members of the public could in principle “create their own personal free version of Spotify”. The executive added it could also allow tech companies to “train on contemporary music at scale”.

Copyright has emerged as a battleground between artists, writers and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Government Considerations and Responses

Across Britain, creative professionals have protested against a government suggestion to allow AI companies use copyright-protected work without consent unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every participant to a government call for evidence on the idea has supported artists’ concerns.

The secretary of state for science, innovation and development told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the matter, adding that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The government has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by next year.
