A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
